News Dr. Gaye Warthe, ACWS Board President, Receives a 2021 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award Dr. Gaye Warthe, ACWS Board President, Receives a 2021 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award December 9, 2021 Dr. Gaye Warthe, president of the ACWS Board of Directors, is the recipient of the 2021 Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award, in the “Breaking Barriers – Fighting gender discrimination” category. Helping to shine a light on the issue of domestic violence and violence against women, to help victims and to find concrete solutions and path to the elimination of such violence, Dr. D Gaye Watson Warthe is an Alberta Volunteer Star. About Dr. Warthe Dr. Gaye Warthe is an enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer whose contributions to the field of gender-based violence response and prevention make a significant impact across the province of Alberta. Dr. Warthe is currently in her second term as President of the Board of the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters (ACWS). Prior to her election as President of the Board, Dr. Warthe served three terms as the ACWS Board Delegate representing Edmonton and Calgary. ACWS’s volunteer Board of Directors determines the strategic direction of the organization. Board President is a challenging and demanding role at the best of times—and especially over the past two years during a global pandemic. Throughout this public health crisis, Dr. Warthe’s tireless contributions have supported the shelter workers across the province who continue to show up for the women, children and seniors they serve, proving their dedication to helping people escaping domestic violence. In addition to her role as ACWS Board President, Dr. Warthe’s volunteer work with ACWS has included membership on the organization’s Finance, Audit and Risk Management (FARM) Committee—ensuring ACWS can carry out its obligations and responsibilities related to financial governance, oversight and risk management—as well as membership on the Social, Legal and Ethics (SLEC) Committee and the Awards Committee. She contributes countless hours of time and a deep well of expertise, all of which makes her a valuable asset to this organization and the community at large. As Associate Dean in the Faculty of Health, Community and Education at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Dr. Warthe’s research in the areas of dating, domestic and sexual violence informs her leadership of the ACWS board. Bringing her academic expertise to the shelter world, Dr. Warthe’s knowledge is invaluable to the work done by ACWS and the sheltering organizations they serve. Dr. Warthe is currently working on projects that include a focus on the prevention of dating violence on post-secondary campuses. Dr. Warthe’s other current volunteer activities include membership on the Registration Committee for the Alberta College of Social Workers. Congratulations, Dr. Warthe!
