Love A Shelter

Showing appreciation for the people who show up every day.

Love a Shelter is a February campaign that invites people across Alberta to write Valentine messages of gratitude and encouragement for shelter workers.

Every day, shelter staff support survivors and families through some of the most difficult moments of their lives, often quietly and without recognition. Love a Shelter is a simple, heartfelt way to show them they are seen, valued, and supported.

Throughout February, we collect Valentine messages of support. In March, ACWS distributes those messages to shelters across the province and shares the impact.

Why Love A Shelter Matters

Shelter work is emotionally demanding, deeply human, and essential to safety in communities across Alberta.

Shelter workers give care, stability, and compassion to others and this is our opportunity to show them the same. Love a Shelter creates space for communities to pause, reflect, and say thank you, reminding staff that their work matters and that they are not alone.

A few kind words can make a meaningful difference.

The Impact of Your Valentine

A Valentine message is a small gesture, but for someone doing heavy emotional work, it can go a long way.

Your message helps:

  • Lift morale and encourage shelter staff
  • Reinforce that communities value their work
  • Strengthen the people who make safety, healing, and hope possible across Alberta

When shelter workers feel supported, shelters are stronger and communities are safer.

Standing Behind Shelters - Always

ACWS supports shelters and shelter workers across Alberta year-round through training, research, advocacy, and collaboration. Love a Shelter is one visible way we show up for the people who show up for others every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I send my Valentine cards?

Please send them to the ACWS office:
400 9804 Jasper Avenue
Edmonton, AB T5J 0C5

What happens to my Valentine after I mail it?

All Valentines are mailed to the ACWS office. ACWS then distributes them to member shelters across Alberta so shelter workers across the province receive encouragement and support.

Can I address my Valentine to my local shelter?

Yes. You can address your Valentine to a specific shelter or write a general message to “a shelter worker.” Both are welcome.

Can I drop my Valentine off directly at my local shelter?

To help reduce pressure on shelters and coordinate distribution, we kindly ask that all messages be mailed to ACWS, rather than dropped off at individual shelters.
