ACWS’s volunteer Board of Directors determines the strategic direction of the organization. Board President is a challenging and demanding role at the best of times—and especially over the past two years during a global pandemic. Throughout this public health crisis, Dr. Warthe’s tireless contributions have supported the shelter workers across the province who continue to show up for the women, children and seniors they serve, proving their dedication to helping people escaping domestic violence.

In addition to her role as ACWS Board President, Dr. Warthe’s volunteer work with ACWS has included membership on the organization’s Finance, Audit and Risk Management (FARM) Committee—ensuring ACWS can carry out its obligations and responsibilities related to financial governance, oversight and risk management—as well as membership on the Social, Legal and Ethics (SLEC) Committee and the Awards Committee. She contributes countless hours of time and a deep well of expertise, all of which makes her a valuable asset to this organization and the community at large.

As Associate Dean in the Faculty of Health, Community and Education at Mount Royal University in Calgary, Dr. Warthe’s research in the areas of dating, domestic and sexual violence informs her leadership of the ACWS board. Bringing her academic expertise to the shelter world, Dr. Warthe’s knowledge is invaluable to the work done by ACWS and the sheltering organizations they serve. Dr. Warthe is currently working on projects that include a focus on the prevention of dating violence on post-secondary campuses.
